Tech Trends and Life Lessons from 2023-2024
A Look Back at 2023’s Milestones and Ahead to 2024’s Possibilities
Lana Lang, a fictional character primarily associated with the Superman universe in DC Comic, said, "Life is about change; sometimes it's painful, sometimes it's beautiful, but most of the time it's both." Indeed it is, and as we look back on 2023, we can see an intricate set of events and experiences that painted the year with a blend of challenges and triumphs. Alan Watts further reminded us that "the only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance," and what a dance this year has been for me, from changing jobs to starting a podcast with a friend of mine. For our industry, from AI to Mixed-Reality, and a focus on old school low tech to disconnect. Let’s take a look.
Technology
AI Owned the Year
2023 witnessed an exciting surge in technology, with Artificial Intelligence (AI) taking a commanding lead. The realm of Generative AI astonished us by creating mesmerizing images and helpful text, dispelling the initial fears of mass job extinction. Interestingly, a report by Gartner revealed a staggering 37% increase in AI adoption in businesses over the year. AI's prominence was also evident in our workplaces, notably in customer service. Retail and healthcare sectors, too, embraced AI more robustly, revolutionizing service delivery and operational efficiency.
The advancements in Large Language Models (LLM), including Google's LaMDA and AI21 Labs' Jurassic-1 Jumbo, were groundbreaking. These models redefined language understanding and generation, though concerns about data privacy and misuse linger. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, commented on this, highlighting the transformative yet challenging path of AI ethics.
